Cytrus announces debut album, Concentrate

Seattle psych-funk octet Cytrus drops its first full-length album next month. Feel the funk now with the lead single, “Extraction.”

Cytrus announces debut album, Concentrate September 10, 2022

Get ready for a juicy album from psychedelic power-funk band, Cytrus. The group is releasing its debut LP, Concentrate, on October 21, 2022.

Concentrate was recorded and produced by Cytrus in Lynwood, WA, at the band’s practice space, a studio connected to the Mexican restaurant Todo México

Because the album is self-produced, band members had to expand their knowledge of engineering to record an album they would be proud to share. “I was new to engineering, so this was my chance to dive in head first,” said lead guitarist and vocalist Jared Squires.

While most of the album will be instrumentals, the band said Concentrate has an overall narrative of goal setting and the inspirations that lead them to continue making music. “The theme of the album is the pursuit of happiness and passion,” said keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Owen Mayo.

Cytrus will measure the success of this album by the number of people who come to see them play live after hearing it. “We’ve built a reputation as a solid live band in the scene, but we haven’t had a definitive studio project to hang our hat on so we can reach new potential fans,” said Mayo.

Beyond the business of the album’s reach, Cytrus hopes people are inspired to “make their own music and get a band together,” said Squires.

The song Cytrus is most excited for listeners to hear is album closer “Concentrate.”

“It was a jam where we just hit play, said B-flat minor, and went on a 15-minute jam. It turned out to be awesome and has some in-the-moment ear magic,” said bassist Luke Nevills.

If you want to dip your toe into their musical style, saxophonist Brandon Hailey describes the song as “a good sampler for what we’re about.”

Concentrate features guest appearances from True Loves trombonist Jason Cressey and friend of the band Shyam Subder Joseph Raja, who plays the tabla on the song “Office Party.”

The band is also releasing a music video for the song “Run This Day,” which features raps by secondary keyboardist Sean Connelly.

You can purchase the album on iTunes, Google Play, and Bandcamp. You can stream it on Apple Music and Spotify. The band hopes to release a vinyl edition once the current vinyl shortage ends. You can pre-save the album at the band’s Linktree.

Cytrus will be performing at Husky Stadium on September 24, the Joshua Tree Music Festival in California on October 6, and opening for Spafford at Neumos on October 20.
