Campana’s “Things U Do” paints a wistful, melodic picture June 21, 2020

Campana’s new single, “Things U Do,” starts off with a lone piano, playing a simple, dark, atmospheric melody that sets a wistful tone for the whole track. Soon after, the beat jumps in, and Campana starts to spit his bars. He raps about love and synergy, expressing an earnest appeal to the target of his affection: Even 2020 can’t stop us from seeking love.

Campana raps a plea to a new love interest, like he’s trying to shoot his shot. He immediately states, “I can tell you ain’t had a real n— before.” The sad, reflective piano melody stands in juxtaposition with the confident lyrics, giving them an air of a heartfelt plea. Comparing himself favorably to the love interest’s ex, he says, “You said the last one was dull, had no passion in it. / Well, I assure you that’s my middle name.” The lyrics paint a picture of a man promising to treat his new love right, eager to shower them with attention.

The beat behind the track lacks a little depth—the bass hits could use more low-end—but it gives the song enough energy to keep grooving along. The production isn’t complex, but the beat, Campana’s raps, and the piano combine together well to paint a contemplative portrait of a man trying to woo a new love. Overall, “Things U Do” is a solid, listenable single: uncomplicated but satisfying, with a catchy piano hook that stays with you long after the track ends.

Campana also released a short live session of the song on YouTube. The vaporwave-like hues of purple and magenta lend a somber atmosphere that gels nicely with the piano melody. It’s heavy on the vibe. Check it out, and then listen to the full track below.
