The world is on fire, and everything is fucked.

Or at least that’s the message Danbert Nobacon and Kira Wood Cramer are putting out with their new track, “Climate Emergency (Parts 1 & 2),” off of their upcoming political protest album, Mesmerica: Expect a Circus. The album is a wacky, theatrical, punk-rock masterpiece based off of Nobacon’s concept for a novel, “Brain Circus,” that pokes fun at politics while bringing awareness to critical issues such as climate change and immigration reform.

“Climate Emergency” addresses both the corporations who contribute to the problem of global warming and the politicians who refuse to stop them in a seven-minute track that presents itself as a perfect combination between the chaos of Insane Clown Posse and the theatrics of Broadway. A circus-y acoustic guitar melody repeats itself throughout the first half, while Nobacon and Cramer bounce back and forth with eloquently crafted lyrics such as, “Climate knows no borders / Climate knows no creed / Climate touches everyone” and, “Now we can’t fail to notice it / Plus the evidence of all the world’s scientists / While the media barely registers it / They know there’s no money in it.” The switch-off between the male and female vocals also works to create a push-and-pull that mimics the sound of an accordion, a staple in circus music.

The second part of the track juxtaposes the quirky circus themes with a smoother guitar melody that sounds like something out of an old Wild West film. Vocals come in softer, creating a half that’s less chaotic to the ear. This part of the song is more of a call to action, with lyrics such as “Exxon knew / Shell knew, too / So did the rest of them / And what did they do?” and, “Our unrepresentative representatives / Your time is up” that urge those responsible to change their behaviors before our planet erupts in flame.

The video extravaganza paired with the song is a shocking and almost nauseating visual aid that illuminates the climate emergency constantly happening in the background. Butchered doll heads and Barbies dressed as politicians flash on and off the screen, with a small baby doll dressed as Donald Trump. Spinning is a key element, as presented by a spinning record, heat dials rising, and globes turning — almost as if Nobacon and Cramer are attempting to hypnotize the viewer into caring about the planet.

Throughout the video — which was filmed in quarantine — Nobacon appears holding posters with information about COVID-19 and the increasing unemployment rate as papier-mache globes are smashed with hammers and set on fire.

“We imagined taking to the streets on Earth Day to yet further state our case that Predator Capitalism is killing the habitable planet but instead had to express our critical thinking from solitary confinement,” said Nobacon.

Despite the restrictions, the shockingly vile video works hand in hand with the chaotic sonic landscape of the song to grab the listener by the shirt and shake them until they recognize the current state of our climate. Nobacon and Cramer leave out no dirty detail, instead choosing to have the listener — pun intended — face the music in its purest form. All in all, “Climate Emergency,” will have you ready to sit down and write an angry letter to your representative about corporate greed.
