Seattle alt-country singer-songwriter Jess Grant embodies Jerry Garcia on his new single, “Seven Dates,” premiering exclusively on Dan’s Tunes. The track comes from Grant’s fifteenth album, Landline, which drops June 1. With help from the Joy Mills Band’s Joy Mills and Tom Parker, Grant has crafted a four-minute song packed with high energy, catchy and sassy melodies, and romance.

Beginning with a distorted electric guitar solo and soon adding in drums, bass, and bluesy harmonica, Grant kicks off “Seven Dates,” in true alt-country style. Smooth vocals enter with expository lyrics — “Seven dates / is all it takes / for a fool like me” — that introduce our leading man: one who falls in love quickly, passionately, and confidently.

Grant drew inspiration from his experiences with online dating. After his marriage fell apart, he decided to get back out there via the internet.

“After 15 years of marriage and a year’s separation, I started dating again via Match.com,” Grant said. “Early on, I fell for a woman who stuck me in the friend zone. It took seven dates (and one sad text message) for me to wise up.”

This realization is captured in the second half of the song, when a clean and carefree electric guitar solo dominates the track before the bliss of blind love comes crashing to a halt. Our leading man comes to understand where he stands, and he decides to cut himself loose: “Seven dates / but not an eighth / I couldn’t take it that far.”

As the track winds to a close, Grant writes in hope for his main character with wishful lyrics: “I’m moving on / I wrote this song / I’m feeling 10 feet tall.” This resolution reminds us that even though love can punch you in the gut, you almost always come out stronger from it.

Grant’s use of sassy melodies and high energy beats blend together seamlessly to create “Seven Dates,” a versatile tune that works both as a lighthearted bop and a meaningful story. Most notable, however, is Grant’s triplet lyrical style, adding a snappy and cheeky tone to every uttered line. The comfort of the steady rhythm in the lyrics allows the listener to lay back and fully enjoy every bit of Grant’s fun and friendly track.
