Mercy Parker frontman Chris Sloan is in the throes of recording his debut solo album, 16 Months, a soft-rock-infused journey through the past 16 months of his life. The first two recorded tracks, “Amnesty” and “These Walls” are an introspective look at loneliness, how we deal with loss, and what we need and don’t need from other people. We caught up with Sloan in the studio and caught every aha moment of clarity. Click through our photo story to see the process.
Mercy Parker frontman Chris Sloan heads to the legendary Bear Creek Recording Studio to begin work on his first solo album.
Bear Creek's Taylor Carroll works closely with Sloan on production.
16 Months is a compilation of acoustic songs written by Sloan during a tumultuous time of his life that lasted — you guessed it — 16 months.
Patrick Casey sits in on drums to record "Amnesty."
Mercy Parker bassist Matt McKay contributes his multi-talented skills on guitar, bass, piano, and more on Sloan's solo album.
Sloan records lyrics for "Amnesty."
Sloan said putting out this record has been a therapeutic release — a culmination of everything he's been through over the past 16 months.
During the final stages of recording "Amnesty," McKay pulls out the slide and adds incredible depth to the track.
Bear Creek has worked with legendary musicians such as Train, Foo Fighters, The Lumineers, and James Brown over the years.
Carroll and Sloan review the recording process for track two, "These Walls."
"These Walls" is an acoustic melody mixed with McKay's piano and some accents on the vibraphone.
Sloan said that he's written some of the best music of his life over the past year.
16 Months is due out later this year.
