On her debut EP, Today I Feel, local singer/songwriter Hannah Abrams not only pulls profound  vocal cords into blissful melodies but also uses her skill on the keyboard to allure the listener. Her sultry vocals and indie-pop style are sweetly contagious, using just the right amount of cheerful optimism. I found myself thirsting for seconds, as each song left a satisfying yearn for more discovery.

Abrams’s Today I Feel designs a depiction of hope. Songs such as “The Invasive Kind,” “Library Fines,” and “Moonchild” deflect the negative bumps in the road and provide clarity. Abrams dovetails the aspects of nature and love, manifesting a relatable EP.

“The Invasive Kind” plays with images of rain and sun in correlation to sadness and happiness. She sings, “for every sunny day, a whole week of rain you send my way.” Using inflection in her vocal tones, she mixes her depths and highs to match the mood of the song. With instruments such as the guitar and keys she adds an upbeat lightness that brings a quality of warmth in times of cold.

This theme continues with “Library Fines,” speaking on all the dreadful things that can get in the way of happiness. Abrams puts them to a halt as she commands her day back. She sings, “hold me tight until I crank out another tone,” still giving an uplifting perspective in this time of her trials and finding solutions. The intensity of the piano develops an empathetic mood of anxiety but also provides serenity at moments.

The serene vibe goes on as the soft keys of “Moonchild” drop. Abrams capers with falsettos to create a pastiche of the moon. Capturing its glow and want for love, she personifies the moon’s existence and comforts it. She urges it to expose its secrets and asks it to use her as shelter, commanding it to be at home in her. If home is heavenly, then Abrams has mastered the sound of what the gates of love would be. As inklings of word mist enmesh bluesy vibes, she allows the beauty of her lyricism to reveal itself.

Everything about Today I Feel exudes the very essence of what optimism is. In this relatable, warm EP we can find solutions to our rainy days and know we are not the only ones.
