Lonely Together is a Bellingham-based duo comprised of Zach Cook and Rosie Matsumoto. Their anticipated debut EP, Neverlost, is expected early this spring. Meanwhile, “No VVS,” the lead single from the EP, gives listeners a taste of what to expect from Neverlost. The track showcases the duo’s talent in its heavy electronic sound and ability to integrate familiar elements of trap and r&b within it.

The layers of production in “No VVS” are crisp throughout the track, and the featured vocals from Tuesday Magee help elevate the single to one that interweaves smooth r&b influences with staccato melodies characteristic of electronic hip hop. The resulting effect is one that’s deceptively simple: relaxing vocals fill the track, gently rejecting a running list of expensive brands, referencing Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and others, while the lack of aggression in the vocals almost contradicts the lyrics. It’s an interesting departure from the usual clout surrounding brands and the respective kind of lifestyle they promote in the hip-hop genre.

It’s clear that Lonely Together is a truly collaborative effort — one that puts forth a personal and positive message for listeners while maintaining a distinctly easy-listening aura. This kind of sound aligns with many electronic/trap productions, tracks that you may not register playing at first but later find yourself absent-mindedly nodding your head to.

If “No VVS” is any indication of the success of Neverlost, their EP shows high promise. Cook and Matsumoto make a formidable team, and the seeming ease that they have with each other is apparent in their sound. Lonely Together is easy, auditory company.
